Oh yeah, the kids...

2 weeks ago I suddenly woke up in the middle of the night in cold sweat.  What was I going to do with the kids this summer while I worked?  While I had made our usual plans to send them to summer camp three days a week for the first half of the summer, I had completely forgotten that the month of August was left open.

Normally, we save August for family trips and just hanging out by the pool or going to the beach.  But for the first time, I am working this summer.  I was met with sudden panic, and then a little sadness.  I really don't want to give up that special time together at the end of summer where we just relax and regroup before the onslaught of the school year.

I quickly set about making arrangements for August.  My son was thrilled to attend a second session of camp with his best friend, who would be out of town for the first half of the summer.  My daughter was excited about attending drama camp at her school, something she has been wanting to do for  awhile, but because it is 5 days a week we never had time for.  Now I need to fill the time - something new for all of us.

I know I've been lucky for all these years, spending a month just puttering around with my kids -- many families do not have this luxury.  But while I know they will enjoy their new activities, I admit I'm going to miss impromptu visits to the ice cream shop and long afternoons by the pool.  Yes we'll still have weekends, but it's just not the same.

They say change is good, but right now all I want to do is hang out by the pool and stagnate all summer...

p.s.  Blog entries two days in row... I'm on a roll :).
